I got a chance to talk to Nick the next day after work. Steve was out in his drive as I got back, music blaring, grinning over at me. I took a deep breath and went into the house. Nick arrived about a half hour after me. I had texted him and said we needed to talk. I wasnât going to confront him about the money, of course, but I felt I could sound him out. More than that, I wanted to see if he had anything further to say about Steve and Cathy. She was clearly in danger of blowing her college altogether.
âWell?â He plodded in the door with the look of someone who has put in a hard dayâs work, overalls grassy and hands still mucky. He washed his hands before putting the kettle on and joining me at the table with a mug of tea and some of his never-ending stash of biscuits.
âI needed to ask you for money for Sam. Heâs going on an outdoor adventure trip, part of some assignment. He needs two hundred, so whatever you can contribute.â
Nick looked out the window in response. His brow was furrowed. âOf course. When does he need it?â he said eventually in a ponderous voice.
âTomorrow, I think. I can cover it for the moment, so you can give it back to me.â
Nick smiled without warmth. âSure. Itâs just Iâm waiting on a pay-out from McCann. Heâs going to come up with it shortly, just some cash-flow issues, but itâll be a good chunk when I get it.â
That sent alarm bells ringing. He was waiting on cash from McCann, so he was obviously short. Someone in that situation might just decide they would take an unofficial âloanâ.
âOh. Youâve been working for him for a while now. Surely, he can give you part payment.â I was suspicious with Nick, but at the same time, if he was getting the run-around from McCann, that wasnât on.
Nick stiffened. âSo you think maybe he has paid me some, but Iâm holding back?â
âNo, thatâs not what I meant. I think itâs very unfair of him not to have paid you at all. How are you supposed to keep going?â
âHeâll be good for it. Some businessmen operate like that. They prefer to pay people in lumps rather than in bits and pieces.â
I wasnât convinced. McCann had too much of the smooth salesman about him, and Nick, for all his other faults, was a bit of an innocent when it came to other people.
âItâs okay. Iâll cover Sam for the moment, but there were a couple of other things I wanted to ask you about. First was if you think Sam is smoking a lot of weed. Heâs spending lots of time with that guy Philly, and he seems to come home stoned.â
âIs he getting his college work done?â
âHe seems to be scraping by. That wonât be enough to get him the scholarship for next year. They look at both academic and sports performance.â
âHmm. Iâll have a word with him.
